Ruby Mining Resumes after Deadly Invasion Attempt
January 05, 25(IDEX Online) - Work has resumed at the Montepuez ruby mine (MRM) in Mozambique, say owners Gemfields after two people were shot dead during an attempt to storm the deposit.
The UK-based miner said on 2 January that the mine was again running at full capacity after an apparent return to calm.
More than 200 people tried to invade the MRM Village close to the mine - where workers are housed - on Christmas Eve (24 December).
Mozambican police and soldiers shot and killed two people during the incident.
The country has been in turmoil since the disputed elections on 9 October 2024 that saw the Frelimo party extend its 58-year rule.
Violence intensified after 23 December, when the results were upheld by the Mozambican Constitutional Council.
