US Customs Seize $3.7m "Smorgasbord" of Counterfeit Jewelry

September 01, 26 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers seized what they described as a "smorgasbord of counterfeit jewelry" with an estimated retail value of more than $3.7 million had the items been genuine.

The 875 items - as well as five designer handbags - were intercepted on August 18 at an express consignment facility in Indianapolis.

The shipment originated from Hong Kong and was destined for a residential address in Georgia and contained earrings, necklaces, and bracelets bearing unauthorized trademarks of Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Versace, Gucci and other luxury brands.

After further examination by CBP's Centers of Excellence and Expertise, the agency's trade experts determined all items were inauthentic and seized the shipment for bearing counterfeit trademarks.

CBP described the seizure as a "smorgasbord of counterfeit jewelry" in its official August 26.

"CBP has an exceptional team of officers and import specialists who are experts in identifying counterfeit goods and work closely with private industry to thwart intellectual property infringement," said Indianapolis Port Director Brett Mueller.

"CBP remains committed to stopping counterfeit smuggling, taking profits from organized crime, and protecting communities from potentially hazardous knockoffs."

The seizure underscores the ongoing challenge of counterfeit luxury goods entering the United States. CBP data shows that handbags, watches, jewelry, apparel, and electronics are among the top product categories being counterfeited.

In fiscal year 2025, the agency intercepted nearly 79 million counterfeit goods with a total estimated retail value exceeding $7.3 billion, with jewelry among the most frequently targeted categories.

Indianapolis has emerged as a key interception point for counterfeit shipments. Last year, CBP officers at the same facility seized multiple packages from China and Hong Kong containing fake jewelry worth millions of dollars.
