Security Guard Charged with Murder after Jewelry Theft Shooting
October 21, 26
(IDEX Online) - A security guard has been charged with murder after fatally shooting a man accused of smashing a jewelry display case and stealing gold necklaces from a kiosk inside a shopping center in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.
Tyron Henton, 31, was arrested and charged on October 16 following the death of Deavyn Holt, 24, in a shooting at La Gran Plaza shopping center two days earlier, according to police and media reports.
Holt allegedly used a hammer to smash the glass display at the jewelry kiosk before taking a panel holding gold necklaces and running toward an exit.
According to the arrest warrant, Henton told investigators that he heard glass breaking and saw Holt fleeing with a hammer. He said he believed Holt posed a threat as he ran past a child.
The warrant states that Henton fired three shots inside the shopping center and two more after pursuing Holt outside. Holt continued running across the parking lot before collapsing near Seminary Drive. He was pronounced dead after emergency responders attempted life-saving measures.
According to the warrant, surveillance footage showed Holt did not threaten anyone with the hammer as he fled. Henton told investigators he had not believed Holt had stolen anything from the kiosk when he opened fire.
The warrant states that Henton could not articulate any imminent threat Holt posed to himself or anyone else.
