Alexkor Discovers 111-Carat Diamond in Alexander Bay
January 14, 03
A diamond weighing 111 carats was found at the Alexkor diamond mine in Alexander Bay, South Africa, chairman Nchakha Moloi said yesterday.
The potential high quality diamond has been named the Cirrus Stone, after the shallow water contractor who found it in a sub-tidal concession area where diver-based mining operations take place. Coincidently, Alexkor also discovered yesterday a 35 carats stone.
Alexkor's sea-based mining operations have been outsourced and the proceeds of the diamonds will be split between the company and the contractors.
Alexkor's alluvial mine in South Africa made a profit last year after running at a loss for six consecutive years. Moloi is confident that this discovery will be a major boost for the company and will turn around the mine's profitability.
