Federated to Cut Jobs Following Merger

As early as it can, Federated Department Stores Inc. said yesterday (Tuesday) it will cut about 6,200 jobs following its purchase of May Department Stores Co. earlier this year.

The layoffs will take place next year, and will include 1,700 positions at May’s headquarters in St. Louis. As part of the deal Federated was not to cut jobs before March 1, 2006.

Federated also plans to convert all 62 Marshall Field's stores to Macy's. The two, together with Bloomingdale's, are now part of Federated.
