Architect Gehry to Create Jewelry Collection For Tiffany & Co.
September 21, 05Renowned architect Frank Gehry, known for buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, will create a jewelry collection for luxury retailer Tiffany & Co.
The Gehry Collection, to be introduced in the U.S. and Japan in April 2006, will debut with six jewelry collections. The launch will include a selection of tabletop items made of precious metals, stones and wood. The creations, according to Tiffany, are “provocative new shapes highlighted with brilliant color, patina and rich grain”.
“In all, the collection promises an exhilarating and beautiful new experience that reflects one man's imagination and lifelong obsession,” the retailer said in a release.
"Jewelry is an art form," said Gehry. "In conceptualizing designs for Tiffany, I worked as I always do, sketching and creating models. Sculptors and painters have inspired me with their ability to make things with their own hands. This process led to the discovery of new ways to give feeling and spirit to form, and realize our shared vision of jewelry that provides a beautiful context for living now."
The Gehry Collection will be introduced in Asia and Europe in fall 2006.
Gehry has received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1989, the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Art Association in 1992, the National Medal of Arts in 1998, and the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects in 1999.
