June 27, 06 The 32nd World Diamond Congress kicked off with a seaside reception Monday evening, as delegates from around the world gathered at the Tel Aviv Hilton Hotel for the biennial Congress. Israeli Finance Minister Avraham Hircshzon opened the reception, announcing his door is always open to the diamond industry. Hircshzon also revealed he is a graduate of the industry, telling the audience that one of his first jobs in his early 20s was in the diamond industry.
The light and friendly discussions that took place during the event were perhaps a sign that many of the issues expected to be raised, the outcomes have already been decided. For instance, Ernie Blom will be elected the next president of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) President Avi Paz will be elected vice president of the organization.
In fact, during a meeting with the Israeli press before the Aber / Harry Winston sponsored reception, one of the heads of the Israeli diamond industry said that Paz will be elected WFDB president following Blom.
Other topics on the agenda have not been officially announced, however WFDB and the International Diamond Manufacturing Association (IDMA) will hold closed sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday. A few open sessions will include speeches by De Beers MD Gareth Penny, DTC MD Varda Shine, Lev Leviev, Aber Chairman and CEO Robert Gannicott, other industry leaders, and ministers.
The Israeli hosts are in particularly interested in creating an event showcasing the country and its diamond industry. Bankers, government officials and mining firms were invited to expand the scope and allow for a wider discussion of industry issues.
On the sidelines of the conference, two other industry related events are taking place – Jovella, a two day Israeli jewelry show, and an auction of rare diamonds and jewelry items.
