15.3% Drop in Polish Diamond Imports to Japan in September

Japan imported $78.978 million worth of polished diamonds in September, a 15.3 percent drop in price compared to September 2005. In terms of weight, 239,565 carats were imported during the period, a 33.5 percent increase. The drop in value and increase in weight brought the average price per carat (p/c) down to $329.67.
India was the largest source of diamonds to Japan by volume and value, supplying 185,306 carats worth $36.787 million. The average price was $199 p/c. Imports from India represent 77.4 percent of the total volume and 46.6 percent of the total value of all polished diamond imports into Japan in September.
Belgium supplied 23.6 percent of goods by value – 25,455 carats worth, $18.622 million at an average price of $732 p/c.
Imports from Israel, declined 34.9 percent to $8.357 million at an average price of $996 p/c.
Imports of gold and platinum jewelry during the month rose sharply. Gold jewelry imports increased 30.9 percent to $66.285 million. Platinum jewelry imports rose 24.6 percent to $40.361 million.
