Rap Mogul Simmons: Diamond Industry Empowers Botswana

Russell Simmons, an American rap producer turned fashion entrepreneur, said he is encouraged by how the diamond industry empowers Botswana. Simmons is currently on a nine-day fact finding mission in South Africa and Botswana with a delegation from his jewelry company.

Simmons, who is looking for ways that diamonds can benefit Africa, has toured the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana, visiting its hospital, and a primary school, as well as meeting with local students

“We are encouraged to see, firsthand, how the diamond industry in Botswana empowers the people of this nation,” Simmons said during a press meeting in Botswana. “It makes a dramatic difference in the quality of life of the people of Botswana. After meeting with President Festus Mogae, I am even more encouraged by his vision for the future of Botswana. The partnership between the government of Botswana and De Beers can serve as a model for other extractive industries in Africa.”

Simmons and his partner Kimora Lee Simmons plan to hold a press conference in New York on December 5, a day after their return to the U.S., to announce initiatives the Simmons Jewelry Company will take following their trip to Africa.

Simmons Jewelry Company is a joint venture with M. Fabrikant & Sons.
