De Beers’ Gahcho Kue Project to Undergo Environmental Review
April 04, 07De Beers’ proposed Gahcho Kue project, which is planned for the Mackenzie Valley in northern Canada, will first be subject to an environmental review.
A Canadian court made the ruling this week after De Beers challenged the review on the basis that no other mining projects in the region have undergone environmental impact reviews.
“We are pleased that we can now take the Gahcho Kue Project forward with confidence in the environmental assessment process and look forward to participating in a thorough review of the project," said Jim Gowans, De Beers Canada president and CEO.
Gahcho Kue is a proposed pit mine 300 kilometers northeast of the Northwest Territories’ capital, Yellowknife. It is a joint venture of De Beers, Mountain Province Diamonds Inc., and Camphor Ventures.
