CIBJO Condemns Burma Situation, Urges Ban

The President Council of CIBJO, The World Jewellery Confederation, voiced strong condemnation of the human rights repression in Myanmar (Burma). It went further, calling on its member organizations to refrain from purchasing gemstones from the Myanmar government.

In a statement issued by CIBJO, the Confederation said it “deplores the violent repression of individuals, human rights and democracy in Burma,” and voiced support for the UN Human Rights Council resolution and Security Council statement on the situation.

In more practical terms, CIBJO reminded its members of their commitments to abide by the CIBJO Code of Ethics. They also urged members of the trade to seek information from their suppliers as to whether their gemstones have originated from Burma and to “consider seriously refraining from purchasing any Burmese gemstones until such time as the United Nations indicate that the process of democratic reform has started in Burma.”

Finally, CIBJO advised its member associations “to urge their members not to purchase gemstones directly from the Myanmar Junta Government.”

Myanmar is the world’s primary source of rubies, and a leading source of many other gemstones. Sales and exports of gemstones reportedly directly benefit the ruling junta.

Following the recent violent crushing of civil protests, there have been calls to end gem purchases from the country, and a number of firms, including Tiffany and Cartier, announced they will not use Burmese gems until further notice.
