Unemployed Surat Diamond Workers Move into Other Sectors
January 11, 09More than a thousand unemployed diamond workers showed up at a seminar that guided them on how to become self-employed, The Times of India reported Friday. Tens of thousands of polishers and other workers employed in Surat’s diamond industry have lost their jobs in recent months, victim to the global economic downfall.
The seminar, organized by the chamber of commerce and the Surat Diamond Association, offered guidance in finding jobs and developing businesses in other sectors, such as the local textile industry.
One long term result of the proposed shift is a loss of knowledge for the diamond industry.
Coupled with loan applications, many of those that attend the seminar may find successful careers in the textile industry. According to one former diamond worker quoted by the newspaper, “I have taken the loan application form and intend to start a small garment shop in my area.”
