LLD Still Tops Israeli Exporters, But Slides 20% in 2008

Lev Leviev’s L.L.D. is Israel’s largest polished diamond exporter, according to the Israeli Ministry of Industry, Trade & Labor. But while he leads the pack for the fourth consecutive year, his exports are continually declining, falling 20.1 percent in 2008 compared to 2007.
The shrinking exports trend is pronounced in the list of Israel’s 25 leading exporters published Monday. Number two Leo Schachter Ltd. saw exports decline 21.1 percent to $352 million.
Rising to the third spot is A. Dalumi Diamonds, which exports grow 7.1 percent to $182 million. Dalumi is the only firm in the top five exporters that increased exports in 2008.
Israel’s list of top exporters only lists exporters that were willing to disclose their figures.
According to Diamond Controller Shmuel Mordechai, who collected the data, 17 companies asked to not be mentioned this year, and so the list reflects 25 of the 42 biggest polished diamond exporters.
According to Mordechai, the $2.567 billion of net exports by the 25 mentioned companies represents about 41 percent of Israel’s annual polished diamond exports.
