De Beers Canada Job Cuts Continue
February 25, 09De Beers Canada announced further job cuts at its diamond mines. Following the 105 jobs De Beers cut at Snap Lake in December, it is terminating another 220 positions, Mining Weekly reported. This will reduce the Snap Lake staff by about 20 percent.
The diamond miner will layoff 128 employees and 90 contractors at its Northwest Territories diamond mine, part of a wider scale back De Beers is making to meet weak demand fro rough diamonds.
The group already decreased production in Canada, Botswana and in South Africa. The company is also in the process of firing about 10 percent of its work force in London.
“This is a very difficult, but necessary business decision, as we respond to the changing client demand for diamonds in the short term,” De Beers Canada president and CEO Jim Gowans said in a statement.
