India Rough Diamond Imports $431 Million

India’s rough diamond trade seemed weak in August, importing $430.81 million worth of goods. This is a 35.2 percent fall, from imports in August 2008, and a 49.2 percent decline, from the $848.31 million imported in July 2009.
In terms of volume, India imported 6.52 million carats, compared to the 9.42 million carats imported the year earlier, nearly 25 percent less. The average value of the country’s imports stood at $66.08, per carat.
India exported some of the goods as well. It shipped out $90.72 million worth of rough diamonds, with an average declared value of $45.93 p/c.
This brings net imports to 4.55 million carats, valued at $340.09 million, averaging $74.75 p/c.
