The stone is one of four diamonds recovered at the Cullinan mine. Two other diamonds, a 58.50 carats diamond and a 53.30 carats diamond, were sold in November for a total of$2.8 million. The fourth stone, a 507.55 carat white diamond, has not yet been offered for sale.
Thus far, the three diamonds have sold for just over $9 million, according to Petra CEO Johan Dippenaar.
The Cullinan mine is a source of high-valued diamonds. The 3,106.75 carat Cullinan Diamond, the largest rough diamond ever found, was found at the Cullinan mine in 1905.
In May of this year, a fancy vivid blue diamond of 7.03 carats from Cullinan was sold for $9.4 million.
