Tiffany Foundation Pledges $1 Million to Save Hollywood Sign

The Tiffany Foundation has granted $1 million to save the site of the iconic Hollywood sign

The Tiffany & Co. Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to save the Los Angeles site which houses the “Hollywood” sign, the company announced Tuesday. The grant will be donated to The Trust for Public Land (TPL) for its campaign to save Cahuenga Peak, where the sign is located.

The grant will go toward TPL’s purchase and conservation of the 138-acre Cahuenga Peak site, after a group of investors who purchased the land in 2002 from Howard Hughes’s estate have put the area on sale for $12.5 million.

TPL plans to join the Cahuenga Peak site with the adjoining 4,200-acre Griffith Park, in order to protect the view of the Hollywood Sign and keep intact the ecosystem of native plants and animals that surround it.

“The Hollywood Sign is an American icon that holds a unique place in the nation’s collective imagination and the cultural history of Los Angeles,” said Michael J. Kowalski, chairman and CEO of Tiffany & Co. “It is a sign that cannot be separated from its untrammeled setting of hiking trails and wildlife corridors. Preserving both means that future generations may gaze on this parkland and know the California frontier before freeways and urbanization and the heritage of magic and inspiration that is Hollywood.”

The Tiffany & Co. Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations working in the environment and the arts, such as the Battery Conservancy and Friends of the High Line in New York City.
