The country exported 522,574 carats at an average value of $1,332.40 per carat and imported 597,001 carats at $1,177.57 p/c, according to figures released on Friday by Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC).
Compared to March, the value of trading in April declined by more than a third and the volume by nearly a quarter. The month-over-month decline and the rise in stock levels may indicate that production exceeded the industry’s ability to absorb the goods.
The U.S. was the leading destination of exports with shipments of 69,684 carats worth $201.1 million, a 13.7 percent decline in volume and 26.7 increase in value compared to April 2009.
India was the leading source of polished goods in April, 260,823 carats worth $178.2 million, rising 22.7 percent and 85.2 percent respectively.
