The diamonds and cash were recovered from diamond dealer Ajay Mehta, who allegedly led the gang of thieves that broke into the deposit boxes at the Bank of India’s Opera House branch in Mumbai.
The diamonds were recovered from various other bank safety deposit lockers held by Mehta while the money was in bank accounts held by him — $46,000 in an account with the Bank of India itself and the remainder at a HDFC Bank account.
Authorities have previously recovered a $1 million in diamonds and substantial amounts of cash.
