Heavy Rain Does Not Keep Japanese Jewelry Shopper Away
July 22, 12 by Edahn Golan
(IDEX Online News) – Sales of precious metals, art and jewelry at Japan's department stores increased 7.7 percent year-over-year in June. The continued increase in demand for this category stands in contrast to overall declines.
Sales at Japan's department stores softened 1.2 percent year-over-year on a same-store basis, according to the Japan Department Stores Association.
The association said the decline in sales was due to bad weather conditions, which included heavy rain and a typhoon.
June sales totaled 482.9 billion yen ($6.155 billion).
This is the second consecutive monthly decline in overall sales. In May, sales were down 1.0 percent.
