GJF Working Toward Becoming a Trade Council

September 28, 12 by Vinod Kuriyan

– The All India Gems & Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) has initiated a process that will ultimately transform it into a full trade council, recognized by the government as representing its particular industry.

At its annual general meeting for fiscal 2012-13, which was held in Mumbai yesterday (Thursday), the GJF adopted a new charter as part of the transformational process.

The new charter has specifications and rules governing everything from who can be a member, through its structure and the processes for the election of its executive council and their terms of office.

As a recognized trade council, GJF will have government-nominated directors on its board – endorsing the body’s composition and processes are approved.

The GJF, as the apex body of jewelry retailers in India, acts as the collective voice of the jewelry retail trade in the country. Formed in haste as retailers came together to make a united representation to the government against a suddenly introduced excise duty on jewelry sales.

It has subsequently worked at trying to standardize the price of gold throughout the gold-hungry nation, building up ethical practices in both manufacturing and retail as well as looking at issues such as synthetic diamonds.
