Antwerp Rough Exports Jump 68% in September
October 11, 12(IDEX Online News) – Diamond traders have exported an exceptionally large quantity of rough diamonds in September, nearly 9.8 million carats, a 67.6 percent year-over-year increase. This is possibly speculative buying on the part of rough traders and manufacturers, interested in stocking up on goods while their prices are low.
The value of these exports, $1.15 billion, is a much smaller 8.2 percent increase, which translates to a sharp 35.4 percent drop in the value of exports.
The surprising figures, released by the AWDC this week, come as manufacturers state that it diamond polishing is a loss generating business today.
Rough diamond imports of 7.4 million carats are a 2.1 percent year-over-year increase. The value of these imports, $1.07 billion, increased 4.6 percent compared to September 2011.
