Section of Miners Strike at Petra’s Cullinan Mine
October 19, 12The Cullinan mine employs 1,100 workers and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said it is not backing the strike. It said, however, that it was obligated to represent the striking workers who are demanding monthly wages of R12,500 ($1,445).
Petra had been hit by a rash of strikes at its South African mines, with workers downing tools at its Kimberley Underground, Koffiefontein and Finsch mines over pay and working conditions. All workers had, however, returned to work by October 12 while talks on these issues continued.
