Valentine’s Day Proposal Loses its Lure

(IDEX Online News) – It may be touted as the most romantic day of the year, but the recent DDB Life Style Study has found that while 5 percent of women reported that they became engaged on Valentine's Day, 72 percent of women disagreed with the statement, "There's nothing more romantic than getting engaged on Valentine's Day."
But it’s not all bad news for jewelers. Fourteen percent of women reported that jewelry was an ideal gift for the day of love, beating out flowers (13 percent), a romantic card (11 percent), perfume (3 percent) and lingerie (1 percent).
To help their clients really wow their special someone, jewelers should encourage the jewelry purchase, but combine it with a simple box of chocolates (appreciated by 15 percent of respondents), a special event or experience (19 percent) or a romantic dinner (25 percent).
And who says it’s all about the love? Six percent of female respondents also admitted to waiting to break up with someone until after Valentine's Day, so that they could receive a gift!
"While Valentine's Day is touted as one of the most romantic days of the year, it's interesting to see just how many people have leveraged the day to end (instead of celebrate) their relationships," said Denise Delahorne, senior vice president and group strategy director at DDB U.S.
"It's also worth noting that while some women would appreciate being proposed to on Valentine's Day, we found that the majority would actually prefer to have a different date as their special day.
