74.79 D VVS1 Pear Shape Diamond Sells for $14 Million

(IDEX Online News) – The record auction season must be in full swing. After a 34.65-carat fancy intense pink diamond broke a number of records at Christie's last week, comes the turn of a 74.79-carat, D/VVS1 pear-shaped diamond to break a record. The diamond sold for $14.165 million, the most paid for a white diamond at an auction in the Americas.

The price, achieved at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels New York auction, is $189,397 per carat. Five people bid for the stone, Sotheby’s said after the auction concluded.

Other noteworthy items at the sale included a 5.03-carat fancy vivid yellow diamond that sold for $827,000 or $164,414 p/c.

A 2.35-carat fancy orangey pink diamond sold for $293,000, $124,681 p/c.

The Magnificent Jewels sale totaled $53.5 million, a new record sum for a spring auction of jewelry at Sotheby's New York.
