(IDEX Online News) – A week after a jewelry theft gave the Cannes film festival some unwanted attention, the famous film festival has been hit by a second suspected jewelry heist after a diamond necklace worth 2 million euros ($2.6 million) disappeared during a star-studded party, according to jeweler De Grisogono.
Fawaz Gruosi, who founded the upscale Swiss company, said the necklace was part of the firm's splashy 20th anniversary collection paraded by 20 models at an event outside Cannes attended by, among others, Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton.
Adding firther embarrassment to the disclosure, Gruosi said 80 bodyguards, local police, hotel security, and De Grisogono staff were watching the jewelry.
A Cannes police source told Reuters that authorities were looking into whether it was a theft, a problem of inventory or a loss, the source said.
Swiss jeweler Chopard reported the theft of jewelry worth $1.4 million in the first week of the 12-day film festival.
The Chopard jewelry was in a safe in a hotel in the center of Cannes which had been rented by a Chopard employee.
The entire safe was removed from the wall and taken during the night of May 16. Chopard later said the value of the jewelry stolen was less than that reported.
Jewelers typically lend high-end jewelry to celebrities at high-profile events related to the movie and music industries.
