U.S. Holiday Jewelry Sales Up 6.9 Percent
February 02, 14U.S. fine jewelry and watch sales in the all-important holiday selling season of November and December 2013 rose by a healthy 6.9 percent, according to preliminary figures just released by the Department of Commerce.
While the sales gain in 2013 was below the increase seen in 2011 and 2012, it represented a solid advance, in line with historic levels, as the graph below illustrates.
Jewelry Sales Momentum Slowed in December
After relatively strong jewelry sales in October and November 2013, consumer demand for jewelry waned notably in December, despite significant discounting by jewelry merchants during the holiday selling season.
In December, total fine jewelry and watch sales rose by 6.4 percent, according to preliminary figures just released by the Department of Commerce. This was slower growth than November’s 8.4 percent gain. October jewelry sales grew by a dramatic 9.4 percent.
The graph below illustrates fine jewelry and watch sales trend in the U.S. market by month during 2013. It clearly illustrates that consumer demand slowed later in the holiday selling season.
