Precious Stone Dealers Protesting About PS MSWG Study

(IDEX Online) – Precious stone dealers from around the world have signed a petition to the boards of their professional organizations protesting the way the Precious Stones Multi-Stakeholder Initiative Working Group (PS MSWG) has conducted a study, asking their leaders to call on Signet and Jewelers of America (JA), who are leading it to take time out, restructure, and provide an objective study to be submitted to the OECD.
The dealers, from the United States, Canada, Thailand, Brazil, Sweden, Switzerland, Israel, Caribbean, Columbia, Tanzania, Britain, Italy and Germany, wrote to the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) and the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA).
The petition largely repeats some of the recommendations made in the IDEX Online Memo by Chaim Even-Zohar last week.
“Basically, this further shows that the PS MSWG cannot continue to pretend that in its current format the authors of the study and the ‘participants’ truly represent the precious stones and diamond industry stakeholders,” says Even-Zohar. “This petition comes in addition to the observations made by governments and others who actually have seen the draft of the study.
“No petition has yet been circulated among diamond people – and it is hoped that there will be no need for that. I trust that the industry’s leadership will know how to conduct its dialogue with the MSWG on the study,” he added.
