IDEX Online Research: Polished Prices Increase in April
May 07, 14(IDEX Online) – The IDEX Online Polished Diamond Index increased in April to 134.2 from 132.9 in March. In round items, all sizes from 0.5 carats to 2.0 carats rose in price.

The IDEX Online Polished Diamond Index began April at 133.8 and ended the month up only marginally at 134.1 as is seen in the graph below.
Taking a more long-term view, the index is approximately at the same point it recorded in mid-2012.
Prices of polished goods moved up in April and the coming months will confirm whether that it a rising trend or whether they will slip back.
Market reports confirmed a rise in polished prices in the first few months of this year, however many market players were expecting polished prices to slip back as diamantaires took a step back to consider their next moves.
For a clearer picture of long-term price changes, see the Index of Round Diamond Price Trends by Size graph below. This shows that stones of 2 carats and less increased somewhat while larger diamonds are still on a long-term decline.
Outlook
The fourth Sight of 2014 took place from May 5 to 9 following the first three Sights of the year that were in the region of $700 million. The fourth Sight is expected to be in the same range.
De Beers reported strong and growing demand for polished diamonds in the first quarter of this year. Consequently, prices can be expected to be pushed slightly higher.
