Gemfields to Sell Matching Pair of Rubies for Sale in Singapore Auction
June 10, 15(IDEX Online News) – Gemstone miner Gemfields has discovered a rare pair of matching pigeon blood color rubies, totaling a combined 45-carats, at its Montepuez mine in Mozambique.
The rare stones will form part of Gemfields' auction in Singapore later this month.
“It is extremely rare to find two matching rubies of this size, colour and quality,” said Gemfields chief executive Ian Harebottle, according to a company statement.
“Their discovery underscores the importance of the Montepuez deposit as a source of some of the highest quality rubies in the world,” he added.
The colored gemstone market has seen several records broken recently. Last month, a 25.59-carat Burmese ruby (where it was previously thought that almost the entire world’s supply of pigeon blood color stones exist) – sold at Sotheby's auction house in Geneva for a record £19 million ($30 million), or almost $1.2 million per carat.
