Zimbabwe Turns to Botswana to Learn How to Increase Value from Diamonds
June 22, 15(IDEX Online News) – The government of Zimbabwe is turning to its neighbour Botswana to learn how to increase its diamond revenue. According to the Zimbabwe Independent, Mines and Mining Development minister Walter Chidhakwa will visit Botswana on July 2 to study the country’s diamond model.
The visit follows similar exploratory trips to Namibia and South Africa.
Chidhakwa plans to merge the mining companies operating in Zimbabwe into a single entity, with the government holding a 50-percent share in a bid to streamline operations in the country.
“The problem in Zimbabwe is that we have companies in Chiadzwa that were opportunistic and speculative. What we are now trying to do is to resolve that problem,” he said, as reported by the Zimbabwe Independent.
Seven companies operate in Chiadzwa –Mbada, Anjin Investments, Diamond Mining Company, Gye Nyame, Jinan Ming Private Ltd, Kusena and the government-owned Marange Resources.
