Rare, Sparkling ‘Triple-X’ Necklace Auctioned for $1.2 Million at Bonhams
June 24, 15(IDEX Online News) – A rare rivière platinum necklace with 52 “Triple-X” cut diamonds, with a total weight of 79.2 carats, sold for $1.2 million at Bonhams Fine Jewelry sale in New York on Monday. Despite the price, the necklace fell shy of its pre-sale estimate of $1.4 million-$1.8 million.
Other top lots included a 25-carat octagonal cut sapphire ring, flanked by triangular-cut diamonds and mounted in 18-karat gold by M.Gerard, which sold for $581,000, exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $400,000-$500,000.
One of the surprises of the sale was the circa 1900 imperial topaz and diamond pendant brooch, centered by an oval cushion-cut imperial topaz and suspended by a detachable imperial topaz briolette, which smashed its $9,000 presale estimate, and sold for $87,500.
Other lots included emerald and diamond earrings (with an emerald weight of 30 carats in total), each suspending an emerald bead, with a yellow gold cap and topped with two round brilliant-cut diamonds (3.80 carats total) that nearly doubled their $60,000 estimate when they sold for $118,750.
In addition, two diamond rings sold for the identical price of $106,250. The first a diamond solitaire ring set with a cut-cornered rectangular step-cut diamond, weighing 3.51 carats and flanked by tapered baguette-cut diamonds mounted in platinum, and the second, centering on a round brilliant-cut diamond, weighing 7.37 carats, with circular-cut diamond split shoulders, with an estimated diamond weight of 1.90-carats and mounted in 18-karat gold and platinum.
One of the star lots, an 18-karat white and yellow gold ring containing a 3.56-carat cut-cornered, rectangular-cut fancy intense pink diamond had an estimate of $600,000-$800,000, but remained unsold.
