UK Police Still Hunting Hatton Garden Heist Mastermind
January 17, 16(IDEX Online News) – UK Police have admitted that they are still hunting the man thought to be the mastermind behind Britain’s biggest burglary, according to a report in The Daily Telegraph.
The suspect, nicknamed “Basil” because of his red fox-color hair, is thought to have escaped with £10 million ($14.25 million) worth of jewels from the heist.
Detectives from Scotland Yard’s Flying Squad confessed they have no clue as to the man’s identity and have appealed for the public’s help, even as three of unknown thief’s accomplices were convicted for their role in last April’s robbery.
Police fear that Basil has left the United Kingdom with the spoils of the heist and may return when his accomplices have completed their sentences. Despite the serious nature of the crime, the maximum sentence for it is 10 years.
The robbery took place on Easter weekend last year in London’s Hatton Garden diamond district. The gang broke into a vault, ransacking 73 of 999 boxes, and escaping with valuables and jewelry thought to be worth around £14 million ($20 million).
