Interest Grows in 2nd Mediterranean Gem and Jewelry Conference

April 07, 16 by David Brummer

(IDEX Online News) – The 2nd Mediterranean Gem and Jewelry Conference (MGJ), whose central theme is on treated and synthetic diamonds, has been required to add an extra workshop on the topic due to high demand.

A workshop that will investigate testing samples of treated and synthetic diamonds is now full, requiring the addition of an extra day that will allow participants to familiarize themselves with the subject in an Advanced Diamond Workshop.

Two workshops will be offered, with gemmologists, appraisers and dealers receiving hands-on experience with 50 diamond samples. The first workshop is entitled “Grading and Screening of Natural and Synthetic Diamonds” and the second, “Using Standard and Advanced Instruments to Detect Natural, Synthetic and Treated Diamonds.”

The MGJ will also hold a round table discussion on “Diamond Treatments in the 21st century,” moderated by John Chapman of diamond industry technical consulting company Gemetrix.

President of the World Jewelry Council (CIBJO) Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri will present the opening address, and his speech is entitled, “CIBJO Blue Books on treated and synthetic diamonds, delivering sustainable and responsible jewellery industry.” He will explain CIBJO’s efforts to develop strategies for accurate disclosure to protect consumer confidence.

Jean Claude Michelou, senior adviser at the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Unit (UNICRI) will speak about the traceability of gemstones, and how proving their provenance will soon become mandatory.

The Mediterranean Gem and Jewelry Conference will take place at the Hotel Tryp Valencia Oceanic, in Valencia, Spain, from May 7 to 9.
