The IDEX Online Polished Price Report - May 2019
June 02, 19(IDEX Online News) After long months of treading water, it seems that small polished round diamonds are climbing back up, with prices in some categories under 0.3 carat rising. In general, throughout the categories listed, price changes - up and down - were sporadic. The most noticeable exception is the upward trend in one carat stones and the clear downward trend in three carats and up.
In the size categories from 0.3 to 0.5 carat, price developments were less positive with some categories losing between two to five percent. Prices for diamonds above half a carat remained stable and even improved somewhat, but in the 0.7-0.8-carat category, some high colors lost several points.
The price pendulum swung into the positive in the 0.8 - 0.89-carat group but swung back into the negative for the 0.9 to 0.99 carat group. Price changes were few and erratic.
The 1.00 to 1.24-carat group, a significant market gauge, remained mostly stable and in high colors and high clarities even showed some impressive growth. The surf for the next two categories, up to two carats, remained flat.
In the three-carat range, lower clarity goods of I1-I3, F colors and lower, showed a clear downward trend of 2.5 to 5 percent, while higher clarities SI1-SI3 / M-N colors, declined two to three percent.
Fancies
It was difficult to make sense of the price changes in fancy shapes. In simple language, they were all over the place...
Price developments in smaller sized goods, under 40 points, could be counted on the fingers of a single hand. Stones between 40-49 points did well in high colors, high and commercial clarities, gaining some percentage points.
In the next categories of half a carat up to 90 points it was difficult to find a logical pattern. This offers proof of the erratic and volatile behavior of the fancy market. Overall, however, price increases outweighed the lower prices paid for fancies. In the one carat to 1.25-carat category, some high colors and clarities did well. This trend for sizes up to three carats was mixed. Different from the significant changes seen in rounds above three carats, fancies saw little movement in prices.
