Coronavirus: Diamond Community Urged to Help Hospitals in Surat and Mumbai
April 29, 21(IDEX Online) - An emergency fundraising campaign has been launched by the WFDB to send medication and equipment to India as it battles a catastrophic spike in Covid fatalities.
The global diamond community is being urged to contribute as the official number of COVID-19 deaths today hit 200,000. Many experts fear the real figure is far higher.
The executive committee of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses agreed yesterday to take urgent action to help hospitals in the manufacturing and trading hubs of Surat and Mumbai.
Its campaign, organized with the Bharat Diamond Bourse and called Diamond Aid, is making personal appeals to industry leaders, and publicizing its appeal through the press, internet and social media.
WFDB President Yoram Dvash said: "The international diamond and jewelry industry is a close-knit community, actually a family, made up of members from around the globe, many of whom live or originate in India. As members of this family, we cannot stand by without helping.
"The WFDB has decided to take the lead in helping our Indian brothers. We call upon the generosity of our industry to help the people of India through this devastating time."
