Pink Diamond sets a $1.62m Argyle Record
July 19, 21(IDEX Online) - A 2.00-ct pink has become the most expensive diamond from the iconic Argyle mine ever sold at an auction or public tender.
The fancy purplish pink diamond (pictured) fetched £1.62m at the debut tender by Australian financial technology start-up yourdiamonds.com.
The historic Fitzpatrick Pink diamond, acquired by the renowned Brisbane collector Di Fitzpatrick in 1988, went to an anonymous buyer.
It also smashed Australia's record for the highest price paid any diamond or piece of jewelry. It was set in April by a square emerald-cut diamond weighing 25.02 carats that sold for $870,000 at the Leonard Joel auction house.
Tom Goodman, CEO of yourdiamonds.com and a former executive chairman of Sotheby's Australia, says he's creating a secondary market for pink diamonds following the closure last November of Argyle Diamond Mine, which supplied over 90 per cent of the world's pinks.
Two further public tenders have been announced for November this year and July 2022.
