Debswana Sales Now Higher than 2019
February 01, 22(IDEX Online) - Debswana's sales of rough diamonds bounced back in 2021 to $3.466bn, according to new figures released by the Bank of Botswana.
That's an increase of 12 per cent on pre-pandemic 2019 when the miner sold $3.05bn, and a rise of 64 per cent on $2.02bn sales in 2020.
Debswana, a joint venture between De Beers and the government of Botswana, has bounced back from Covid lockdowns and travel restrictions which closed its borders for eight months in 2020 and forced De Beers to relocate viewings for Sight holders.
Anglo American, parent company of De Beers said Last week that production in Botswana rose during 2021 because of the planned treatment of higher-grade ore at its flagship Jwaneng mine (pictured).
Production across all its mines in Botswana rose 35 per cent year on year in 2021.
