Solid Gold: The $11.7m Cube in Central Park
February 20, 22(IDEX Online) - A huge cube of pure 24-karat gold, weighing 410lbs (186kg) and valued at $11.7m was unveiled as one-day exhibit in New York's snowy Central Park, amid tight security.
The contemporary artwork, by the German artist Niclas Castello, was cast in a kiln specially made to cope with the size and volume of the gold involved.
Castello, 43, bought the gold at $1,788 per ounce to promote his new cryptocurrency Castello Coin ($CAST), being launched with an accompanying NFT auction on 21 February.
His wife Sylvie Meis posted online: "Never before in the history of humanity has such an enormous amount of gold been cast into a single, pure object."
