"Ancient Text" in Lab Grown Diamond
May 23, 24(IDEX Online) - A lab grown diamond submitted for grading was found to have what GIA experts described as "lines of text in an ancient manuscript" in a cloud of tiny inclusions.
The authors of a "Lab Note", in the spring edition of GIA's Gems & Gemology journal, say they have never seen such a feature before.
The 1.67-carat pear-shaped CVD stone (D / S1) submitted to the Surat lab, in India, "displayed an interesting feature with numerous cloud features resembling lines of text" in its pavilion, they said.
The diamond had subsequently undergone post-growth high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) annealing.
"This diamond was noteworthy for its unusual and visually appealing clarity characteristic," said authors Sally Eaton-Magana, Manisha Bhoir and Girish Dodiya.
"Additionally, the dichotomy of a thoroughly modern diamond with a cloud feature that evoked an ancient text provided an interesting submission."
