IGI to Grade Moissanite
May 27, 24(IDEX Online) - International Gemological Institute (IGI) is to issue grading reports for lab-created moissanite in a strategic alliance with Charles & Colvard, the US-based manufacturer and distributor.
IGI will use the same 4Cs as diamonds, plus grading measures specific to moissanite, and will laser-inscribe each stone.
Moissanite, a form of naturally occurring silicon carbide, was discovered by the French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893 and is incredibly rare. Commercial moissanite is all lab-grown.
"Moissanite has long been celebrated for its brilliance and durability, but until now, consumers have not had access to moissanite gemstones with grading reports backed by an industry leader in the space," said Don O'Connell, president and CEO of Charles & Colvard.
He said the collaboration with IGI was designed to maintain brand integrity in a market "increasingly saturated with false information and counterfeit products".
Reports for Charles & Colvard's Forever One brand of moissanite will initially be available only to the trade. Later this year consumers will be able to buy finished jewelry mounted with moissanite certified by IGI.
