Lucara Ecstatic: 2,492-ct Diamond is Second Biggest Ever
August 22, 24(IDEX Online) - A huge 2,492-carat diamond - the second biggest ever in the world - has been recovered by Canadian miner Lucara at its Karowe mine, in Botswana.
In an announcement yesterday (21 August) the Vancouver-based company said it was "thrilled" and "ecstatic".
The new recovery - so far unnamed - is the biggest diamond recovered in over 120 years. No details have yet been provided about the stone's clarity, which will be critical to its value.
In size it is second only to the iconic 3,106-carat Cullinan, discovered in 1905 at the Premier Mine, South Africa.
It was cut into was cut into several stones, including the 530.2-carat Great Star of Africa, now mounted on the Sovereign's Sceptre with as part of the British Crown Jewels.
Lucara said its 2,492-carat diamond was detected using X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology, installed in 2017 to identify and preserve large, high-value diamonds.
