Eight Arrested over Diamond Worker's Death
September 24, 24(IDEX Online) - Eight people have been arrested in Surat, India, over the death of a diamond polisher they suspected of stealing cash and diamonds from his employer.
Lalji Bambhaniya, 35, was reportedly kicked, punched and beaten with tools from the factory where he worked in the Kapodra area of the city, then left there, in the locked building, to die.
The owner of the factory and his son are among those arrested. They have been named by local police inspector M B Ausura as Thakarsi Vaghela and his son Vishal, according to reports by Times of India and Indian Express.
Bambhaniya and another worker at the unit were suspected of stealing diamonds worth $420, as well as $240 in cash. Bambhaniya had moved to Surat a year and ago and was living at the factory.
He was allegedly spotted in a market and taken to the factory, where he was assaulted. Police were subsequently alerted.
