Mozambique Violence Threatens Gemfields' Ruby Mine
December 25, 24(IDEX Online) - Gemfields says it may be forced to halt work at its Montepuez ruby mine as post-election violence grips Mozambique.
The UK-based gemstone miner yesterday (24 December) warned there may be interruptions to operations after groups associated with the illegal mining and trading of rubies started fires in nearby villages.
They have targeted buildings owned by MRM (Montepuez Ruby Mining), which is 75 per cent owned by Gemfields, including two police stations, a community center and offices. They also sabotaged the water supply to a mine workers' village.
"The company's priority remains the safety and security of its employees, contractors and community members," Gemfields said. "The company continues to closely monitor the evolving situation."
Protests have engulfed the south-east African country since the disputed 9 October elections that saw the Frelimo party extend its 58-year rule and its leader Daniel Chapo take office as president.
On Monday (23 December) the Mozambican Constitutional Council upheld the election result, prompting further waves violence, with reports today (25 December) of 21 deaths in last 24 hours.
