Worker "Flees with $170,000 of Diamonds"
January 02, 25(IDEX Online) - A fugitive worker in India, accused of stealing diamonds valued at over $170,000, switched vehicles 13 times to avoid capture.
Police finally arrested the man, named as Sachin Makwana, 12 days later (on 22 December) and 700 miles away.
During his time at large he reportedly sent his boss a video of himself in which he appeared to discard the stolen diamonds in a creek.
Makwana, 40, worked as an assorter for a diamond company in Goregaon, Mumbai. He is alleged to have stolen 491.7 carats from a drawer at his workplace.
Police tracked his movements using footage from 120 surveillance cameras, as well as tracking his phone and those of family members.
He was eventually apprehended in Rajasthan, where police recovered almost all the diamonds.
