(IDEX Online) - The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History is to display a dazzling collection of 41 fancy color diamonds owned by the late Harry Winston, including the "exquisite" 2.33-carat Winston Red.
Ronald Winston, son of the King of Diamonds, who died in 1978, has gifted the entire collection to The Smithsonian.
They will be on show from 1 April at the museum's Winston Gallery, in Washington DC, home to the 45.52-carat deep-blue Hope Diamond that Winston donated back in 1958.
"The Winston diamonds are unprecedented in their beauty and rarity, and we are thrilled to welcome them as additions to our National Gem Collection," said Kirk Johnson, sant director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.
"We extend our gratitude to Ronald Winston for making this gift to the nation possible. This ranks among the most significant gifts ever received by the Smithsonian."
The Winston Red is one of the largest diamonds ever graded as fancy red by the GIA.
