US Diamond Origin Declaration Delayed
March 05, 25
(IDEX Online) - US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has delayed plans requiring importers to state the country of origin of their diamonds.
The new rule was due to be implemented this April, but has now been postponed until a date "to be determined," according to the CBP's latest update of its Automated Customs Environment (ACE) schedule.
Importers are currently required to certify that goods are not from Russia, but are not obliged to disclose where they are actually from. The CBP gave no reason for the delay.
It was less than a month ago that CBP said importers would have to upload a PDF document on official company letterhead detailing the origin of all loose diamonds and jewelry containing diamonds. At the time, it did not specify a carat size threshold.
Last week the G7 and EU nations postponed implementation of a blockchain-back traceability scheme, but said traders importing rough diamonds of mixed origin must now present a Kimberley Process certificate listing all countries of origin.
We have approached CBP for comment.
