Tariff Fallout: GIA's US Labs Turn Away Foreign Stones
April 08, 25
(IDEX Online) - GIA says it US labs won't accept +4.0-cts, fancy color diamonds and certain other items from abroad until confusion over Trump's new tariffs has been cleared up.
There's a concern that goods sent to the US for grading could be hit with the new "reciprocal tariffs", even though they're not being sold.
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) says it is working to understand the impact of newly-announced tariffs and what operational changes may be needed.
For the time it says its labs outside the US will not accept items that fall outside the local service criteria, and which would therefore have to be processed in the US.
It is also asking customers not to send items directly to either its Carlsbad lab in California, or to New York.
GIA said: "We recognize that these changing conditions may cause confusion. "It is important that all clients and their shippers understand and comply with the US government requirements.
