Implemented by Population Services International, YouthAIDS is an upbeat global initiative that uses music, media, fashion and sports, to spread messages of HIV prevention to the world’s youth population in over 60 countries.
This initiative, to create a collective effort within the diamond industry to raise money for YouthAIDS was spearheaded by Sally Morrison, Director of the Diamond Information Center who recently accompanied YouthAIDS Global Ambassador Ashley Judd to South Africa where they toured various hospitals and on-site clinics that are funded by De Beers.
“YouthAIDS along with our ambassadors Wynonna and Ashley Judd are thrilled to be working with such a dynamic group of industry leaders” said Kate Roberts, Founder and Director of YouthAIDS.
“With one child dying of AIDS every minute and an estimated 4.9 million new HIV infections in 2004, it is imperative that industries come together to help fight this terrible epidemic. Wynonna’s performance at Couture will be the start of what I hope is a long and rewarding relationship between YouthAIDS and the diamond industry as we come together to help in this great cause.”
YouthAIDS promotes abstinence, delayed sexual debut and protected sex among 15 to 24 year olds, the generation most at-risk of infection. YouthAIDS speaks to millions of youth worldwide through its programs in more than 60 countries. In addition, YouthAIDS provides a platform for corporate involvement and works to mobilize and engage corporations and the entertainment industry in HIV/AIDS prevention.
