Christie’s Asia Auctions 101.27 Carat Diamond; Fancy Green Sells for World Record Price

May 29, 08 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

The largest diamond ever auctioned in Asia sold for $6.21 million Wednesday in Hong Kong. Christie’s auctioned the 101.27 carat shield shaped F / VVS1 diamond for $61,500 per carat to a private buyer at its Jewels: The Hong Kong Sale.

Also of note was a 10.36 carat square shaped fancy green diamond, which sold for $3.485 million, or $336,500 per carat, and a 16.04 carat circular cut D / potentially flawless diamond for $3.341 million, or $208,500 per carat.

Christie’s notes that the fancy green diamond realized a world auction record for a green diamond and that the 16.04 carat stone was sold for a world record price per carat for a colorless diamond at auction.

Another record was hit when a pair of emerald, natural pearl and diamond ear pendants, by Etcetera, was sold for $2.409 million, or $126,000 per carat, for a world record price per carat for an emerald at auction. The emeralds were 9.12 and 8.84 carats, and the earrings were formerly the property of the Grand Duchess Vladimir of Russia.

“This was the most successful jewelry auction ever staged at Christie’s, and numerous world records were achieved all across the board,” said Vickie Sek, director of the Jewellery and Jadeite Department, Christie’s Asia.

“The sale reaffirmed the appetite of private collectors who confidently bid at top levels for the finest quality gemstones, jadeite and jewelry. Nine of the top ten lots sold for over $2 million, an unprecedented achievement in the jewelry auction world.”
